Spaghetti (Italian: [spaˈɡetti]) is a long, thin, solid, cylindrical pasta. It is a staple food of traditional Italian cuisine. Like other pasta, spaghetti is made of milled wheat and water and sometimes enriched with vitamins and minerals. Italian spaghetti is typically made from durum wheat semolina. Usually the pasta is white because refined flour is used, but whole wheat flour may be added. Spaghettoni is a thicker form of spaghetti, while capellini is a very thin spaghetti.

Originally, spaghetti was notably long, but shorter lengths gained in popularity during the latter half of the 20th century and now it is most commonly available in 25–30 cm (10–12 in) lengths. A variety of pasta dishes are based on it, and it is frequently served with tomato sauce or meat or vegetables.

Boil a pan of salted water, add a tablespoon of olive oil, and pour in the pasta. Stir the pasta with a long-handled spoon to prevent it from sticking to the pan. Return water to the boil then simmer the pasta for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring frequently. Test the pasta beginning at 4 minutes to see if it is tender and slightly firm or “al dente.”

Storage Advice:
Once the package is opened, transfer to an airtight container or reseal the zip lock package and store in a cool dark place.  There’s really no need to freeze uncooked pasta, because it typically has a shelf life of a few years.  It does not freeze well because, it is really dry, there is no liquid component to freeze.

Some benefits of proper food storage include eating healthier, cutting food costs and helping the environment by avoiding waste.

Here are some tips for maximising the shelf life:

  • Store in an airtight container.
  • Store in a cool, dark cupboard.
  • Store away from direct heat or sunlight.
  • Keep lid tightly closed when not in use.
