Additional Information:
Red rice is a variety of rice that is coloured red by its anthocyanin content. It is usually eaten unhulled or partially hulled and has a red husk, rather than the more common brown. Red rice has a nutty flavour. Compared to polished rice, it has the higher nutritional value of rice eaten with the germ intact.

The red variety gets its rich colour from an antioxidant called anthocyanins, which are also found in deep purple or reddish fruits and vegetables. The compound is believed to have properties that can reduce inflammation, allergy, prevent risks of cancer and help in weight management. The manganese present in both varieties helps in strengthening metabolism, while magnesium helps in a migraine, lowers blood pressure as well as risks of heart attacks. Along with calcium, magnesium helps in maintaining healthy bones and teeth and prevents risks of arthritis and osteoporosis. Selenium, on the other hand, protects the body against infections.

Storage Advice:
Some benefits of proper food storage include eating healthier, cutting food costs and helping the environment by avoiding waste.

Most types of uncooked rice have an indefinite shelf life. The main challenge is keeping it free of dust, insects and other contaminants. White, wild, Arborio, jasmine and basmati rice all have an indefinite shelf life when kept free from contaminants. The exception is brown rice — thanks to its higher oil content, it won’t keep nearly as long, usually up to 6 months in the pantry and up to 2 years if frozen.

  • Store in an airtight container.
  • Store in a cool, dark cupboard.
  • Store away from direct heat or sunlight.
  • Keep lid tightly closed when not in use.
  • Suitable for home freezing.
