Additional Information:
Jumbo oats are oat groats, rolled flat, partially pre-cooked in steam. Use their creamy taste in a coarse porridge, bake into biscuits, flapjacks & crumbles or use raw in muesli. Toast in oil & malt extract for ‘granola’.

Oats have numerous uses in foods; most commonly, they are rolled or crushed into oatmeal, or ground into fine oat flour. Oatmeal is chiefly eaten as porridge, but may also be used in a variety of baked goods, such as oatcakes, oatmeal cookies and oat bread. Oats are also an ingredient in many cold cereals, in particular muesli and granola.

Historical attitudes towards oats have varied. Oat bread was first manufactured in Britain, where the first oat bread factory was established in 1899. In Scotland, they were, and still are, held in high esteem, as a mainstay of the national diet.

In Scotland, a dish was made by soaking the husks from oats for a week, so the fine, floury part of the meal remained as sediment to be strained off, boiled and eaten. Oats are also widely used there as a thickener in soups, as barley or rice might be used in other countries.

Oats are among the healthiest grains on earth. They’re a gluten-free whole grain and a great source of important vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants. Studies show that oats and oatmeal have many health benefits. These include lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels, reduce blood pressure, constipation and a reduced risk of heart disease.

In addition, they are very filling and have many properties that should make them a weight loss friendly food. Oats are among the healthiest foods you can eat.

Storage Advice:
Whole grains still need be stored carefully since the healthy oils are found largely in the germ of whole grains. Refined grains spoil more quickly than intact grains, because their protective bran layer has been broken up and oxygen can reach all parts of the grain.

Both whole grains and refined grains can be negatively affected by heat, light and moisture.  Because each grain has a different fat content, their shelf lives vary. In general, follow these rules of thumb:

  • Store in an airtight container.
  • Store in a cool, dark cupboard.
  • Store away from direct heat or sunlight.
  • Keep lid tightly closed when not in use.
  • Suitable for home freezing.
