Additional Information:
Tasty, nutritious brown rice has only the inedible husk removed, which means that its nutrients, including B vitamins and fibre, are preserved. The bran layers left on the grain give it a tan colour and a nutty flavour with a slightly chewy texture. It takes longer to cook than white rice, but the cooking methods are much the same.

One cup uncooked long grain brown rice yields about 3 cups cooked rice. It can be eaten plain, used as a base for stir-fries, or as an ingredient in pilafs, soups, casseroles, salads, and desserts. You can substitute cooked brown rice for white rice in most recipes.

Storage Advice:
Some benefits of proper food storage include eating healthier, cutting food costs and helping the environment by avoiding waste.

Most types of uncooked rice have an indefinite shelf life. The main challenge is keeping it free of dust, insects and other contaminants. White, wild, Arborio, jasmine and basmati rice all have an indefinite shelf life when kept free from contaminants. The exception is brown rice — thanks to its higher oil content, it won’t keep nearly as long, usually up to 6 months in the pantry and up to 2 years if frozen.

  • Store in an airtight container.
  • Store in a cool, dark cupboard.
  • Store away from direct heat or sunlight.
  • Keep lid tightly closed when not in use.
  • Suitable for home freezing.
