Additional Information:
Barley is high in fiber, especially beta-glucan, which may reduce cholesterol and blood sugar levels. It may also aid weight loss and improve digestion. Whole-grain, hulled barley is more nutritious than refined, pearled barley. It can be substituted for any whole grain and easily added to your diet.

Barley’s fiber, potassium, folate, and vitamin B6 content, coupled with its lack of cholesterol, all support a healthy heart. Barley is an excellent source of fiber, which helps lower the total amount of cholesterol in the blood, thereby decreasing the risk of heart disease.

Barley Flakes are cleaned, rolled and slightly toasted, grains of Pot Barley. Barley flakes add a slightly sweet flavour to any recipe that requires flakes – biscuits, bakes or puddings.

Pot Barley has been pearled for a shorter amount of time and still has most of the barley bran intact. Pot barley is best when soaked overnight in cold water, then cooked in three parts liquid to one quantity of grain.

Pearl Barley gets its name from the extra rounds of polishing it goes through. The pearling removes the hull, as well as the bran layer. Pearl barley does not need to be soaked before use and will become tender during the cooking process.

Storage Advice:
Whole grains still need be stored carefully since the healthy oils are found largely in the germ of whole grains. Refined grains spoil more quickly than intact grains, because their protective bran layer has been broken up and oxygen can reach all parts of the grain.

Both whole grains and refined grains can be negatively affected by heat, light and moisture.  Because each grain has a different fat content, their shelf lives vary. In general, follow these rules of thumb:

  • Store in an airtight container.
  • Store in a cool, dark cupboard.
  • Store away from direct heat or sunlight.
  • Keep lid tightly closed when not in use.
  • Suitable for home freezing.
